The Role of Slow Slip Events in the Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake Cycle

چکیده

Slow slip events (SSEs) detected on the Cascadia Subduction Zone interface at 30–50 km depth imply a release of accumulated strain. However, studies interseismic deformation in typically find coupling upper 30 interface, which is generally accepted as defining seismogenic zone. Estimates using net velocities (including SSE effects) and restricting to shallow may underestimate deficit accumulation depths >30 km. Here, we detect reversals GPS motion indications SSEs, then use displacements estimate cumulative slow from 2007 2021. We calculate pure velocities, correcting for displacements, them constrain an elastic block model, estimating subduction down 50 By evaluating independently, examine SSEs’ effect strain accumulation, inter-SSE vertical forearc. that moderate high extends 40 depth, while consistent with previous estimates zone, deeper region beneath Olympic Peninsula be partially (61%) relieved aseismically by SSEs. Earthquake hazards on the cascadia subduction zone.

Large subduction earthquakes on the Cascadia subduction zone pose a potential seismic hazard. Very young oceanic lithosphere (10 million years old) is being subducted beneath North America at a rate of approximately 4 centimeters per year. The Cascadia subduction zone shares many characteristics with subduction zones in southern Chile, southwestern Japan, and Colombia, where comparably young oc...

Periodic slow earthquakes from the Cascadia subduction zone.

Continuous geodetic measurements from convergent margins have shown that deep transient creep events can release large amounts of strain energy without detectable seismic shaking, and they are thus known as slow or silent earthquakes. Because subduction zones generate the largest earthquakes, seismic hazard assessment relies on understanding the degree to which slow earthquakes reduce the energ...

Episodic tremor and slip on the Cascadia subduction zone: the chatter of silent slip.

We found that repeated slow slip events observed on the deeper interface of the northern Cascadia subduction zone, which were at first thought to be silent, have unique nonearthquake seismic signatures. Tremorlike seismic signals were found to correlate temporally and spatially with slip events identified from crustal motion data spanning the past 6 years. During the period between slips, tremo...

Statistical Analyses of Great Earthquake Recurrence along the Cascadia Subduction Zone

Goldfinger et al. (2012) interpreted a 10,000 year old sequence of deep sea turbidites at the Cascadia subduction zone (CSZ) as a record of clusters of plate-boundary great earthquakes separated by gaps of many hundreds of years. We performed statistical analyses on this inferred earthquake record to test the temporal clustering model and to calculate time-dependent recurrence intervals and pro...
